5 Ways to Make Move-In Day Much Easier
College move-in day is a fun and exciting time for freshmen. It finally marks the day that you’ll be on your own. You’re probably excited to meet new people and start your life as an official college student. But first, you have to unpack everything into a small room. Unpacking for 2 dorms has taught me a couple of lessons about move-in day. In order make move-in day less stressful, please follow my 5 tips.
Get There Early
Make sure to arrive a bit earlier than the expected time. Remember that there are about 10 Resident Assistants distributing keys compared to about a hundred students trying to move in. If you arrive late, you’ll probably end up waiting in a long line. You want to make sure to arrive on time in order to unpack quickly and explore campus a bit.
Label, label, label
When you’re packing, make sure to organize your items and place them in labeled boxes. Have a box labeled for your clothes, shoes, and even your decorations. This saves so much time when you begin to unpack because you’ll quickly know where everything is.
Have a Bag with Essentials
One thing that I regret not doing during move-in day was having a little “emergency bag.” By “emergency bag,” I mean to pack essentials to stay the night, kind of how you would pack for a sleepover. The reason why this is highly recommended is because sometimes you don’t get to unpack everything all in one day. When you’re tired and hungry, you’re not going go want to go looking for these essential items. That’s why it’s always good to pack a separate bag with all of these things.
Have Cleaning Supplies Handy
The first thing that you should do when you enter your dorm is clean. You’re probably not the first person to live in that room. Have a bag with cleaning supplies such as disinfectant spray and wipes to eliminate any excess dust. Clean the surfaces of desks, window blinds, and even the mattress. Remember that this is now you’re home for the next year or so and you want it as clean as possible.
Save the Decorations for Last
If you’re anything like me, you’re probably extremely excited to decorate your dorm. You’ve scrolled through Pinterest to get inspired and even bought your tapestry and string lights. I strongly advise you to wait until everything is unpacked and then decorate your room. You want to make sure that everything is in place and that your parents help you with anything before they leave, such as organizing and heavy lifting.
So those are 5 tips that you need to take into consideration when you move into your dorm. Believe me when I tell you that these pieces of advice are important and will allow for a smooth and easy transition into your new home. Have a great move-in day!
